Winter Hiking Tips From Your Local Cedar Sign Maker

Are your hiking boots put away now that it’s Winter? If so, pull them back out!

Hiking doesn’t have to be a three-season activity anymore, with the help of these winter hiking tips, you and your family can be successful hikers in the Winter. Just remember to layer up, bring your hiking essentials, and don’t forget the “just-in-case” necessities.

Example of Middle Layer Fleece

Layer Up

  • Base Layer: is your next-to-skin layer and is meant to help you regulate your body temperature by moving perspiration away from your skin. A “base layer” could be anything from briefs, sports bras, underwear sets, to tights and T-shirts.
  • Middle Layer: is your insulating layer that helps you retain heat by trapping air close to your body. Fleece is an example of a “middle layer”.
  • Shell Layer: is your protecting layer which protects you from wind, rain, or snow. The “shell layer” comes in many forms including; waterproof/breathable shells, water-resistant/breathable shells, soft shells, waterproof/non-breathable shells, and insulated shells. You can read more about these HERE.

Tip from Your Cedar Sign Maker: NEVER Wear Cotton as it Stops Insulating Once it Becomes Wet.

Hiking Essentials

  • Navigation: whether it be a map or a compass (or both!), always have something with you so that you return home safely.
  • Sun Protection: sunscreen (yes even in the Winter), chapstick, and sunglasses to beat that snow-filled glare.cedar sign
  • Flashlight: it gets darker faster in the Winter (and don’t forget extra batteries)!
  • First-Aid Kit: before you leave it’s always a good idea to make sure you have all of the essentials, click HERE for a complete list.
  • Matches: in case you need to start a fire for warmth.
  • Pocket Knife: a small tool with many uses.
  • Water: pack a few bottles of water, you need to stay hydrated even in the Winter.

“Just-in-Case” Necessities

  • Emergency Shelters such as a tent, tarp, or even a reflective blanket
  • Extra Day’s Supply of Food
  • Extra Scarf
  • Extra Hat
  • Extra Gloves / Mittens
  • Extra Socks

Hiking in the Winter is a perfectly safe activity if you wear and pack the proper equipment. It is a great activity to engage in to help you fulfill all of those New Years’ Resolutions for living a healthier lifestyle.

The Car Show is Coming to Anoka!

One of my favorite activities of the Fall, the Finale of the Anoka Classic Car Show, is coming to Downtown Anoka! You are probably wondering why I’m so excited that an Anoka Car Show is being hosted in Anoka. Well, usually the Finale of the Show is hosted at the State Fair. Now that it is being hosted in Anoka I will for sure be able to go! I read on Down<img class="alignright wp-image-2805 " src="×199.jpg" alt="anoka car show " width="231" height="153" srcset="×199.jpg 300w, 620w, https://cedarrustics official×86.jpg 130w” sizes=”(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px” />town Design’s website that the show is on September 17th. The fact that the show is in September is even better because I know the weather won’t be too brutal. I love when big events are hosted in my hometown; being able to participate in local events is one of my true passions.

Some may say that they don’t see a sign maker like me to be into cars and car shows. The truth is is that I enjoy talking to the people of Anoka more than looking at the cars. It’s so nice to have a community come together and be able to walk around the city that we all love.

Come support the Anoka Classic Car Show Grand Finale on Saturday, September 17, 2016! And don’t forget it’ll be right here in Downtown Anoka! I hope to see you all there!

Cabin Life in the Fall

I was out for coffee with one of my friends the other day when she told me a story about something her daughter said. The two of them were hanging out on the swing that looks onto the lake at their cabin when she noticed a sad look on her daughter’s face. She asked her daughter to tell her what was wrong. She then got to explaining how she was sad that Summer was almost over and that meant that they wouldn’t be going to the cabin until next Summer. This conversation got me thinking about my cabin life in the Fall and how more people should continue to travel up North into the Fall.

One of the best parts about owning a cabin up North is witnessing the transformation that nature goes through during the Fall season. We love seeing the gorgeous colors emerge during this season. There are many benefits to enjoying cabin life into the Fall season.

For one, family time becomes even more special. Now that school has started and a special project for work has begun it is becoming increasingly difficult to get everyone together to go up North. This just means that when everyone is abcabin-life-in-the-fall-cedar-rusticsle to go, the time with them becomes more special. Pictures taken up North during the Fall turn out amazing! Get your family together and get those family pictures taken; they will look great for the holiday card! The temperatures are cooling down, which means that the air conditioning turns off, open your windows! Your bills will surely go down, I know mine do document collaboration software. With the air conditioning turned off you can let your cabin breathe again. Boating will become one of your favorite activities, all you need to do is add a couple more layers and enjoy the boat ride! The nature walks are more enjoyable, with cooler weather you can be out longer and it doesn’t hurt that you have great views along the way! Walks are my favorite part of cabin life in the fall because they help me relieve my stress.

Just because you can’t go swimming or tubing, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still enjoy yourself at the cabin when it’s fall or even winter! The activities are endless; ice fishing, boating, fishing, hunting, bon fires and more! This year, be different and spend some more time up at your cabin, even if it’s the end of November! Cabin life in the Fall can be just as enjoyable as it is during the Summer!

My Experience with Pokémon Go

A few days ago I was driving along Main St. in downtown Anoka on my way to work at Cedar Rustics business collaboration software. While driving, I noticed an abundance of youngsters walking along the sidewalks, they weren’t just walking though, they were all on their cell phones! And I just thought to myself; “is it really too hard to just walk and spend an hour off of your phone?”. At the stoplight I got a closer look at some of their phones and discovered that they were all playing that game with the lizards. Or are they dinosaurs? Wait, I think they are called Pokémon. That’s what it was; they were all playing Pokémon Go! I had heard about this game ever since it released in early July. But I didn’t understand; what was so special about Pokémon Go?

When I arrived at work I explained to some of my employees of what I had observed on my way to work. They were all shocked by the fact that I hadn’t yet played or even downpokemon-go-dex-bulbasaurloaded the game. One of them offered to download it for me. He reminded me to never play Pokémon Go and drive, but honestly who would ever do such a silly thing? As I was walking to my office I noticed a small creature on my screen; he was blue and green with a green garlic-looking thing on its back. I threw one of my balls at him, and I actually caught him! It was called a Bulbasaur. I don’t know why, but I got so excited when I caught him, maybe this is why everyone loves this game.

After a few days of playing Pokémon Go, I realized two things; I shouldn’t waste my time or my Poké Balls on Weedles and I also learned that DiscoverAnokamy company, Cedar Rustics, should participate in the Downtown Anoka Pokémon Hunt! We love to be involved in our community and Discover Anoka always makes it easier for us to be invloved since they are the ones that organize events like the Pokémon Hunt. So there we were on July 23, walking around the community trying to find Pokémon. It didn’t hurt that the Sidewalk sale, which was AMAZING, was going on during the same time. Thank you to everyone at Discover Anoka for making the Pokémon Hunt and the Sidewalk sale a great success! Everyone here at Cedar Rustics appreciates your efforts for bringing the city of Anoka closer together!

Even though it rained, it was a blast being able to interact with our community and even helping each other out with finding Pokémon. We were also able to talk with many people about Cedar Rustics and what we do. Pokémon Go is a great game, but I don’t know if I will be able to play it much in the coming weeks; we have been getting calls and orders like crazy. Speaking of, there the phone goes again; I better answer that. Until next time, have a great rest of your week everyone! Go Pokémon Go!

Custom Wooden Signs: Cabin Naming Ideas!

One of the best parts, and also one of the most challenging parts of owning a cabin is figuring out what to name it! “How do I Name my Cabin?”

The Three Column Approach is one of the most popular ways people come up with a name for their cabin. Column one has descriptive words, column two has nouns and column three are words that describe different styles of homes. You then pick a word from each column and then you have the name of your cabin! Check out the column here! Another way a lot of people choose a name is by naming their cabin after their favorite animal or plant. Some examples of those include; Trout Shores, Cardinal Valley, Sage Creek and Sunflower Stream.

Many people choose to name their cabin after loved ones. For example; a couple months ago there was a gal that named her cabin after her dog who had passed away the summer prior, and she ordered two custom wooden signs saying “LuLu’s Ridge”. Another family ordered a set of custom wooden signs for their family’s cabin that say “The Johnson Family Cabin”.colonial

Dream Cabins – Which One is Your Favorite?

We were browsing through the internet for some cabin décor inspiration, and ended up on <a href="http://www.cabinlivingmag project collaboration” target=”_blank”>this page from with a glorious selection of dream cabins. The trouble is, we can’t decide which we would rather have if we could only pick ONE.

Lorentzen-backext01A cabin sign from Cedar Rustics would look great with “A Barnyard Beauty”. The vintage barnyard wood would complement a custom wooden sign from Cedar Rustics. Reclaimed barn wood from the 1880s is used throughout the house on the walls, ceiling and floors. It features a master bedroom and two bathrooms on the main floor and has two bedrooms in the loft upstairs. The house has the feel of old and worn but with the help of warm paint and accessories, it has the feelings of fresh and new! This would be one of the top dream cabins for anyone who loves the rustic feel, but wants the modern amenities.

A custom wooden sign from Cedar Rustics would also complement the “Living in the Fresh Air: Porches, Decks and Patios” cabin. This cabin offers a screened porch which offers the full outdoor experience without actually being outside. With decks, screened porches and patios the “Living in the Fresh Air: Porches, Decks and Patios” cabin would be a dream cabin for anyone who loves outdoor entertainment.

AW09_123_R5-layered_V3-1Another one of our favorites from the article was the “Best view from the Windows in the Cabin” cabin. We could see one or more of our custom wooden signs hung up throughout the house. This house is full of windows of all sizes that shine natural light in throughout the day. Not to mention that windows like these, which have double panes are very energy efficient since they provide extra insulation. We would consider this a dream cabin for anyone who loves the gorgeous views cabins have!

Living the Cabin Life: Cabin Décor

Imagine yourself fishing off the dock in the early hours of the morning, waiting for something to bite. You can hear the kids yelling and laughing each other in the house wondering when the blueberry pancakes will be ready. One of them yells for you saying that breakfast is done. Walking up the hill you glance at the personalized wooden sign made by Cedar Rustics, it’s the one with theOslab image of the fish and has the word “on”. It was one of the best gifts you had ever received.

Walking up the creaky steps onto the deck the smell of the pancakes and bacon hits you. You open the sliding glass door to see the kitchen, living room and dining room. The walls are the rich golden-colored logs produced from Cedar Trees. The whole place is furnished with custom cabin décor, picked by you and your wife. Flannel blankets from last night’s fort-building cover the carpeted floor. On the mantel of the fireplace is the family picture and above that is the wooden family sign.

The kids are at the dining room table eagerly waiting for you to sit so that they can start eating. To match the cabin décor, a family of clay bears sit in the center of the table which is made from the same wood as the cabin. The kids are talking about what kind of personalized wooden sign we should get for the front of the cabin look at this site. The wife is explaining how she wants to redecorate our room. She is telling you about this article she read from and how she liked the colors that the designers, Brooke an Ian Hanson used.

In the afternoon, you and the family walk over to the neighbor’s house. Her cabin décor is very similar to yours. Everybody in the area knows how popular cedar wood and flannel are. It’s her birthday and you and the family decided to give her a custom engraved sign from Cedar Rustics. Hot dogs are eaten and cake is served and “goodbyes” are said.

Sitting around a bonfire with the wife, you look up and see how clear the sky is and notice how many stars there are. You hear loons calling for each other, a splash from a fish in the lake and the crickets creaking. The kids are roasting marshmallows, while the dog is sleeping. And then you glance up and once again notice the custom personalized sign from Cedar Rustics.

After a long day at the office where ten people needed your help at the same time, the phone was constantly ringing and where somebody accidentally spilled their morning coffee on you, don’t you just want to go home to relax and be happy?
